When MONA ABED was 13, her parents - native Israelis - moved the family from Australia to a small, remote village in the Galilee.  As Arab Christians, she and her sisters had to learn Hebrew and Arabic. With support from family, teachers, and her peers, Mona adjusted to her new surroundings. She began her studies in laboratory sciences at the Technion in 1999. An excellent student, she continued to work towards a master's degree in medical sciences. She graduated summa cum laude with two published articles and changed fields when she began her doctoral studies, also at the Technion, switching to research at the Polak Cancer Research Center. She has received both a Fulbright and a Max-Planck award.

Born in Israel, NIR RIKOVITCH is pursuing his bachelor's in the Technion Department of Aerospace Engineering.  He moved to Massachusetts when he was 15, but returned to Israel after graduating from high school to enlist in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Nir is a 1st Lieutenant reserve in the Liaison and Foreign Relations Division, the IDF unit in which he served his active duty.  As an operations officer, he specialized in real time liaison and diplomacy with the Egyptian army and the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai Peninsula. Nir is also a researcher at the Technion Autonomous Systems Projects Laboratory.  He has been an instructor in a physics workshop at the university's Student Union, and a teaching assistant and tutor at the Technion's Pre-Academic Center.  During his freshman year, he volunteered as a "Big Brother" in the Technion's Perach program, mentoring a child from a disadvantaged background.

Associate Professor RAFAEL SACKS of the Technion Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering focuses on two research areas that are revolutionizing the tools and practices used in construction and architecture. The first is Building Information Modeling (BIM) - the process of managing building data by using three-dimensional, building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction. The second is Lean Construction - an approach to design and building that maximizes value and minimizes waste. Prof. Sacks established and has lead the BIM and Virtual Construction laboratories at the Technion's National Building Research Institute since 2003. Prof. Sacks earned his bachelor's degree in 1983 from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa; his master's in 1985 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his doctorate in 1998 from the Technion - all in civil engineering. After his studies, he served in the Construction Unit of the Israel Defense Forces. He also worked as a structural engineer in various companies in South Africa and in Israel, where he was a consultant to Israel Aircraft Industries, Intel and the Ministry of Construction and Housing. Prof. Sacks has been recognized with numerous awards and prizes, and has many publications in professional journals.
